the contract
The Japanese public takes the idol career very seriously, these role models will be appearing everywhere in Japanese media. Products of all sorts will be sold in order to advertise these groups to the public, so the companies place a heavy emphasis on what types of role models they want their idols to be, not only for their audiences' sake, but also for their business.
(i) NO DATING. This controversial unspoken law is highly frowned upon in the business. To keep the idols' fans pleased and to maintain their pure image, the companies highly discourage dating. Enacting on a risky romance should be kept a secret for the media will turn the relationship into a career breaking scandal!
(ii) Set a good example! Fans of all ages admire idols; everyone has their favorite and everyone is watching making important to maintain a squeaky clean image!
(iii) Respect your fans!If it weren't for them, you wouldn't be where you are today. Always give them a smile, treat them with respect, and connect with them.
(iv) Give it your all! Being an idol isn't easy, to maintain your spot in the ranks, and by popular demand of your fans, you're expected to make regular appearances on television, radio, and commercials! On top of that, you have to train for your performances, singing and dancing, public etiquette - so much to do!
(v) Take care of yourself! The work of an idol is tiresome and stressful, so it's important to take some time off to take care of your health. If you become ill or injure yourself, you would not only worry your company and fellow members, but also your fans around the world!

the positions
Idols have a diverse set of ages! From early teens to mid-twenties, maybe even beyond that! Trainees tend to be in the younger group while leaders are often the oldest.
(i) LEADER The all important head of the group. They make the most public appearances and as a result, attract a lot of fans. Because they are the face of the group, they garner a lot of attention, their actions are watched very carefully by the public. The leader is also in charge of keeping order when the manager is not present, making them the most responsible of the group.
(iii) SOLOIST Not something that every group has but it's something that they'd want. A soloist is very skilled at anything that ranges from dancing to musical instruments. Some have an extraordinary singing power, even surpassing the leader's talents. They often are invited to events related to their skills, performing solo as a guest and during concerts. The businesses can also allow them to manage solo careers on the side.
(ii) MEMBER A normal member without any extraordinary responsibilities or specialties. They make appearances with other members and are the less predictable choice when it comes to picking favorites. Ranging from extremely popular to unknown, the status of these idols depend on their group and personalities.
(iv) TRAINEES The new recruits in the group. The attention they gather is sudden and quick only to die down after a couple of weeks of being admitted. They are typically the youngest member in the group.
