ESSENTIALS
PERSONALITY Jae is not your everyday charismatic performer. Offstage, she's actually quiet and cripplingly awkward. She's not particularly easily embarrassed, but she is odd and tends not to understand people. She's bookish and intelligent, a song writer with musical fingers and a couple of instruments at her disposal, even though she doesn't use them when performing. All of her true passion comes out with her performing and her music. She transforms into a whole different person, and her stage name comes from that. Phoenix; because she is reborn onstage and comes out on fire, burning and sparking, electric. It truly seems as if she's a whole different person, elegant, graceful, and powerful, equal parts energy and control. Once offstage, pensive, coltish Jae makes a reappearance. She's invested in her art, her music and her singing, and it's the most important thing to her. In that one aspect of life, she has no doubts about her ability. Though she generally retains some of her onstage charisma during performances of any sort, including interviews, modeling, and shows, it vanishes like the switch was turned off the second she's out of those situations and back in normal life. Offstage Jae is blunt and a bit of an enigma, which causes her to come off somewhat cold. In truth she's extremely generous and will often do random acts of kindness as long as no one knows it's her that did them. It's not the attention she gets from singing that she likes, it's the art itself, and reaching people with it. Music has tremendous power to connect to people, to make them realize they're not alone. That's part of why Jae loves it so passionately. When she was young, music made her realize her connection to the rest of the world. She wants to give that to others. Even so, she can't seem to exude the same excitement about anything else.
She generally appears very thoughtful. She's intense both offstage and on, but in very different ways. Onstage she's like fire, crackling and sharp. Offstage she's like ashes, quietly smoldering. She generally prefers quiet companionship to loud, rambunctious groups, and in those situations she usually stays quiet and watchful, not much for jumping in to add on. She's not easily angered, but when she is upset she doesn't yell. The quiet stays, but the words she does say cut like knives. She's eloquent and bookish, but not all that outgoing, though she may sometimes wish she was. It's hard, after all, watching from the sidelines all the time. She'll work on it, but she's been this way for a long time, and it's a hard habit to break.
HISTORY Chiasa Kuragi was a business powerhouse, a woman quickly moving up the rungs of one of Japan's biggest companies. She was known for being a go-getter, an untraditional woman who had smarts and ambition beyond her years. Kyung Than was about the opposite, mild-mannered and quiet, but very intelligent, a researcher who couldn't decide just what it was he wanted to focus his research on. She was sent on a business trip to Korea, and he fell in love. After a few long months of an incredibly long-distance relationship, sustained by phone calls, letters, and the occasional visit, Kyung moved to Japan. They dated properly, and after another year they moved in together and got married. Chiasa had never really been looking for a family, not so soon, but it seemed natural to be excited when they realized she was pregnant. Jae was born, and soon after, Jae's younger brother Hiro. Thanks to her husband's ability to work from home (he had settled on researching parasites and ways to keep them from latching onto animals, particularly livestock, and his lab was known throughout Jae's childhood as absolutely off-limits because it was full of all kinds of terrifying specimens, though they were, of course, dead), Chiasa never had to stop her work at the company. She rose through the hierarchy like everyone had predicted.
Jae was always a shy and bookish child, quiet and rather lonely. While she was still young, Chiasa enrolled her into a weekend program that performed shows and musicals, hoping an environment with public performance and lots of other kids would help her daughter to come out of her shell. However, the way she acted at home didn't change at all, and while Jae fervently declared that she was enjoying the program, Chiasa wondered if it was helping at all and resolved to take her out of it after the first show had passed. To her shock and surprise, when the family assembled to see the musical the group was putting on, Jae was not only one of the lead characters, she performed beautifully, with a confidence Chiasa had never seen in her daughter. Jae quickly gained a fascination with all sorts of performing arts. She learned to play guitar and piano, though she was interested in some of the stranger instruments and was told to wait until she had mastered the basics. She started writing songs, and as a response, writing more in general. Eventually, her interest in acting became lesser and she focused on the singing aspect of the musicals, though her background in acting helps her to sing with more emotion and power. Within a couple of years she was solely focused on singing, and Chiasa began talking about getting her an agent and herding her into auditions. Kyung was supportive, though largely uninvolved.
APPEARANCE The first thing that really sticks out about Jae's appearance is, of course, her hair. Bright pink and long enough to reach her mid-back when worn loose, Jae's hair is what distinguishes her to her fans and to others in the industry. She's got a cute face, but without the differentiating feature of her hair, she would be the exact same sort of pretty that many other idols are. Her hair makes her stand out and draws attention to her, though that was not her original intention when she dyed it. Really, she was bored of her natural dark hair and wanted a change, and she had always liked bright colors, particularly the orangey pink that frequents sunsets. It came out a bit too cotton candy for her tastes, but she wound up liking it and keeps dyeing it to maintain the same color. Another odd feature is her eyes, which are a surprising shade of blue. Jae wears colored contacts, of course, which may seem odd because she's not actually a particularly vain person, and while she considers dyeing her hair a very normal alteration to make, colored contacts honestly seem a bit too fake to her. However, her natural eyes are remarkably similar to her brother's, and when he decided to follow her into show business she didn't want to be affiliated with him. She has no problem with her brother, but she didn't want either of them to be known simply as the other's sibling, and wanted them to each gain popularity based on their own talent rather than the talent of their family members. Her contacts are used to disguise the resemblance. Jae is a bit taller than average, and the standard weight for her height. She's slender but not skinny, with healthy curves and athletic legs from dance routines and regular morning runs. Her complexion is pale with a pink tinge, and she burns easily when she gets too much sun, but seems incapable of tanning. When she reads, she wears frameless glasses.
COMMON WEAR Jae's clothing style alternates between entirely casual, bordering on sloppy, and intricate and odd. It really depends on how she feels that day. She's a fan of jeans and t-shirts, or sweatpants, and a lot of the time she can be found in simple clothing like that. Other times, she prefers button-downs and blazers, or skirts with ruffles and lace, usually in dark colors. She has no defined style, but she likes clothing that she considers interesting and unique, things that can be paired together with more mundane items so they'll stand out. She has a lot of hair and it tends to get in the way, so when she's going to be really busy she's a fan of ponytails, headbands, and bows that will keep her hair out of her face. She also likes hats.
OTHER FEATURES Jae has each ear pierced once. She also has a scar on the inside of her left calf from an accident when she was young. It's long, faded, and white, but raised. You usually can't see it because it's on her inner leg, and therefore hidden from the front and back. She's considering a few more piercings, in other parts of her ears, but so far hasn't gotten any.

OTHER INFORMATION
TALENTS & SKILLS Jae's talents are largely music themed. She's good at songwriting, guitar, piano, and singing, and her passion for music means she practices often. However, she's much better at guitar than she is at piano. She also is good at remembering random facts from things she's read, which is not usually all that helpful.
DISCOVERY Jae was discovered after a couple of experiences in commercials and other small show business jobs. Her agent wanted her to work her way up from little things and not go after a big audition so soon, because she thought if she failed it might discourage Jae and keep her from pursuing singing any further. However, Jae was incredibly intrigued when she heard that GEM was holding auditions, and snuck off on her own to attend them without telling her agent. She did tell her mother, who was supportive, though nervous. She wound up getting noticed at the audition by one of the studio executives, and she was signed to GEM soon after. At first it was unclear if she would actually become part of GEM247 or some other project done by GEM, but in the end she was brought into the group as one of the members. She dyed her hair soon after that, so it's very hard to find pictures of Jae with her natural hair and eyes, though a dedicated fan could try.
ETCETERA Jae took her mother's last name instead of her father's at the time of her first show business job, because her agent thought Jae Kuragi had more star potential than Jae Than. Therefore, she signed the contract as Jae Kuragi and has gone by that name ever since. She never felt any particular attachment to her last name and found the switch easy to make, though she doesn't like explaining why she has a different last name from her brother and father when people ask.
Jae is technically a Korean name, as she had her name picked out by her father. However, it's simple enough of a name that its origins aren't obvious just from hearing it or seeing it written, as Jae grew up in Japan and still writes it in Japanese kanji. She actually has very little experience in speaking or writing in Korean, save for a few things she knows from when she was little, most of which are lullabies. However, she has a pretty good grasp of English thanks to lessons in school.
Jae's name and stage name are secretly a pun. Jae, in Korean, means ash. Her stage name is Phoenix, because she transforms into a different person onstage and is "reborn" like the Phoenix from the ashes. Phoenix rises from Jae.
Jae writes some of GEM247's songs. She also has a good amount of songs which wouldn't suit the style of the group, and she can't bring herself to sell them elsewhere, so she mostly keeps them to herself. She's recorded a couple of them on her own, just to have.
Despite what most people think, Jae inherited some of her mother's ambition, and someday wants to either graduate from GEM427 and be a leader or soloist of a group, or start a rock group on her own.
