ESSENTIALS
PERSONALITY in interviews and public events, yuko is a very formal and composed woman who speaks with discipline, and rarely does she allow herself to be caught off-guard. for all her relative inexperience in the japanese entertainment industry, yuko moves and speaks as if she belongs anywhere and everywhere. there is a confidence that is honed sharp like a blade, certainly, but there is also a willingness to adapt to industry standards. truly, few realize how democratic the system is when all that stands between herself and failure are the perceptions of the public audience. yuko is nobody's bubblegum princess, but that's what her fans like about her. every step is punctuated with purpose. some may even go so far as to say that the mystique is part of the charm that sets her apart in the entertainment world.
truly, yuko throws herself into her work. it's almost as if she wants to be somewhere else. maybe she does. maybe she's an english girl at heart who wants nothing more to disappear into a world that is not her own. they're only half-right. she doesn't want to be a kiryu doll in a puppet theatre. she wants to be the princess, the rogue, the precocious daughter, the bedraggled prostitute. the queen of spirits, the single mother. a place where kiryu yuko does not exist. she scrapes and tears at the persona until there is nothing left except a pretty face and her linguistic talents. she wakes up as kiryu yuko in the morning and goes to bed as kiryu yuko in the night. what of her hours in between? that's when she will pass interviewers the director's business card.
that's not something that the gossip magazines get to hear about, but they can keep guessing. she shines so brilliantly, but yuko is naught but a wisp of smoke when someone gets too close.
are you awake? are you worthy?
are you h e r e ?
she can't say that she thinks much about the people who are unable to answer those questions for themselves. they say that yuko sports a rather regal sort of arrogance. with some humor and an ironic smile, yuko says that she doesn't have the time in her time table to counter all the accusations. perhaps they would achieve better results if they penciled in a time with her manager. her public persona is rather aloof, but she is known for being genuinely considerate of others when the situation arises.
HISTORY yuko grew up in a rather normal nuclear family. the kiryus had moved to england for her father's job, but the family had never fully let go of their japanese roots. they still spoke the language in the house, and they celebrated japanese holidays. yuko developed a good grasp of english, which would eventually assist in her budding career. she had good grades, a sensible head on her shoulders, and a sizable amount of friends who admired her for her drive and compassion.
she also had a weakness for dramas of all kinds, and not just the romance ones. horror, police, historical - she watched them all. yuko went through them quickly and often had to ask to borrow her older sister's disks. her sister wasn't quite as academically gifted and she would often run into trouble with her parents for sneaking out at night. nevertheless, she held television dramas to an almost religious regard. it was never about the celebrity scandals and gossip. it was always about their stories on the screen.
yuko was fifteen when the talent scouts came, all the way from japan. the company had wanted some fresh talent that hadn't already been scouted by all the japanese variety shows and contests. she was only aware of their presence when her sister had excitedly brought a poster from the company, calling for young girls who were interested in a new production.
her sister had been so happy. her boyfriend of three years had just broken up with her, but everything was finally falling into place.
falling into place
like the car accident that took the mobility of her lower body for good. her spine was beyond medical help, and so was her dream. yuko had listened to her cry from behind the door of her hospital room. the audition was at five in the afternoon.
if she ran, then maybe yuko could still make it. she did, with five minutes to spare. somehow, she mustered the courage to pass the audition. as the young english girls snarled about the company's japanese bias and how they missed out on a cute anglo-saxon girl, yuko only turned around and recited half of katherine's lines from taming of the shrew, act one scene one. spitting anger and all.
if her competitors' reactions were bad, yuko was unprepared for her sister's reaction. she just couldn't believe that after all the kindness she had shown her, yuko would just take advantage of the situation to steal her dreams away.
"i did it for you"
"fuck off, you're not welcome here, not now, not ever!" she screeched as the nurses came rushing in. yuko left with the knowledge that she was living what was supposed to be someone else's life, someone else's dream.
it's a story that not even the tabloids have ever gotten wind of. yuko intends for it to stay that way.
APPEARANCE yuko is of rather average height for a japanese woman. she is of moderate build, although this often changes depending on whichever film she is contracted to. her blue hair is actually natural because of animanga logic, and she is usually fairly light on the makeup unless her work demands otherwise. casual, comfortable clothes are more her style, but yuko is also known for being able to bring an evening cocktail dress to its fullest potential. her favorite shade of lipstick is coral.
OTHER FEATURES permanent features would be rather inconvenient to her career, so no.

OTHER INFORMATION
TALENTS & SKILLS aside from her superb skills in front of a camera, yuko has an above average command of english. she can certainly sing, but she does not have any plans to branch out beyond movies and television series. she's curious about musicals, however.
ETCETERA yuko's japanese tends to be very polite, grammatically. this is because most of her spoken japanese in english was directed towards her family. she's certainly capable of dropping the habit on-screen, but she could probably talk to her worst rivals with a smooth sort of formality.
