ESSENTIALS
PERSONALITY Thanks to living a kind of sheltered life before her emergence as a member of GEM247 Saya is kind of awkward. She's not really terribly street smart and it's pretty easy to pull a fast one on her just because she just doesn't know any better. Other people, especially those with more experience usually seem kind of trustworthy no matter how questionable they seem to others. At the same time she has an air of innocence about her that really speaks to her fans and makes her a fairly popular idol. Part of this naivety is an act, Saya just doing what she's become so adept at: acting how she thinks people expect her.
Her life's been full of trying to change herself to fit the expectations (real or assumed) of other people. Saya is pretty convinced that nobody would really like to meet the real Sayaka, so she needs to find examples to emulate. Thanks to this she's developed a kind of public face that has seeped into her everyday behavior since people respond well to it. To everyone she meets she's polite and deferential, acting the role of a model young lady in the traditional Japanese manner. She also has a playful side and likes to tease people, prodding whenever she feels like it; often these are kind of inappropriate times.
In the public eye she's a cute, well mannered girl whose stature on stage is almost angelic. With some regularity she'll inject a little mischief into performances by making jokes and playfully singling out people in the audience for faux flirting or little conversations. These are her ways of connecting to the fans, and she's perfectly happy making small talk to those fans she meets during the 'come-to-you' events GEM247 is known for. Outside the public eye she spends half her time fretting about how she should act, dress and talk, to the point that she's grateful to have someone inform her decisions or outright make them for her. It gives her some structure that's been largely missing from her life. The other half she's actually quite the consummate geek, excited by the newest anime, manga, science fiction or video game that's come along. Of course she'll refuse to talk about them with others since that's not what she thinks an idol is supposed to be like. Instead she'll try her best to get excited about fashion and tends to fail miserably since she really doesn't know anything about it.
She's pretty low maintenance out of the public eye and can be hard to motivate if she just doesn't feel like doing anything. Saya is also known for having an overactive imagination that leads her to just assume things about other people based on circumstantial evidence and heresay. Though she might believe they're OK people she also tends to buy the latest gossip and rumors hook, line and sinker. Her tendency to change herself to match expectations stems from a lack of structure in her early life as well as a history of being told she makes stupid decisions. These decisions are usually just her taking the first thing that comes to mind and running with it since it seems easy to do that.
HISTORY Saya's early childhood was totally devoid of structure or consistency thanks to pre-existing problems in the Motoyama household. Her parents were already pretty dysfunctional when she came into their lives and things got even more complicated. They moved around Japan at an alarming rate that guaranteed she wasn't able to make any friends up through kindergarten. The only thing that was consistent was that the couple argued constantly at a volume that carried right over to the neighbors'. As she grew up a little her father realized that she didn't look like she was fully Japanese since her hair was a color no one in the family had. This was proof to him that his wife had been cheating, that Sayaka wasn't his daughter and therefore that he didn't have any responsibility to raise her. To this her mother responded by admitting several affairs, saying that they had all been better to her than her husband, and then leaving the home for several months. By this time her father had a full time job with odd hours and was rarely around anyway.
After the argument that led to her mother's prolonged absence Saya ended up getting regular angry lectures from her 'father' on those occasions when he was home. As a result she started going over to her neighbors' place since they were so much nicer. Maybe they knew the details about her family, maybe they felt sorry for a little girl whose parents were never around. The end result was that the Moriyamas were far more of a family than she'd ever had. Hayato Moriyama - later to become the leader of an idol group - was like her big brother, always there for her. She fell for his pranks pretty regularly but she never complained since she was happy just having someone to call brother. Those adults who were her real parents were just people who were at her family's place on rare occasions seemingly for the express purpose of yelling at her.
When her surrogate brother was taking singing and dancing lessons, Saya decided that she wanted to too. Mostly, at first, because Hayato-niisan was doing it and she wanted to have something in common with him. As she grew up she tried to find some kind of identity so that she could fit in with people at school. Her first idea came from watching an old TV drama and for a while she was totally obsessed with becoming a sukeban or biker chick. She even started aping the rough speech and pattern of dressing since that's what her fictional role models did. After getting in trouble for skipping classes and getting into a fight at school, she was given a stern talking to by her surrogate family. At this point what her actual parents and classmates had told her seemed true: she made dumb decisions.
Trying to rectify this she started acting much more polite and kind towards everyone, though she still dressed like a slob when she could get away with. Having skipped out on practices when she was in her faux rebellion stage she worked extra hard to make up for lost ground. When she developed a crush on one of Hayato's friends she started reading magazines and blogs about how to act to impress boys. This resulted in her suddenly dressing much more preppy and girlishly as well as paying much more attention to her hair. She even took a page out of anime and set up a big, dramatic confession to the boy at a romantic place. When she was rejected Saya was pretty miserable but was soon distracted by her father, in a rare appearance, dragging her down to audition for Gem Talent Agency. He wasn't interested in her well being but did know she could sing and therefore wanted the kid who wasn't even his to become a cash cow to help with his gambling habit.
Somehow she stayed calm and perky enough to impress the reps and was signed originally as individual talent. Soon thereafter someone involved with GEM247 pitched her manager the idea of having Sayaka join the popular idol group. Not just as a member but as a soloist given how impressed he'd been with her first studio session. Just as she turned fifteen things were finally looking up for her. A chance to share her talent with the world, working in the same industry as her beloved big brother and suddenly no more being shouted at. Her real father had last been seen heading into Aokigahara, her mother hadn't been seen in Japan for over a year. As long as she acted like the nice, cute idol everything would keep going well.. at least, that's her hope. Now into her first year with GEM247 she's eager to please the other girls in her group, who are kind of like the sisters she's never had. And if she gets to bother Hayato-niisan every now and then, all the better!
APPEARANCE Sayaka is a pretty average height for a Japanese woman, physically underdeveloped enough to kind of qualify as willowy. Or she would if she were a little taller. Though she otherwise looks perfectly Japanese her orange-blonde hair is completely natural and indicative of an unknown mixed heritage. She's grown it out long since she read somewhere that boys prefer girls with long maidenly hair; normally she braids back some of the side locks as sort of a tiara or crown, ending in a bit of a ponytail in the back. When she's feeling lazy her hair tends to be all over the place as if she'd just rolled out of bed. Her eyes are a neutral brown but almost always full of emotion, be it excitement, mischief or nervousness.
COMMON WEAR Most commonly Sayaka likes to wear kind of girly clothing that wouldn't be out of the question for a normal girl her age. A bit of lace or frills here and there are nice but it still needs to be kind of simple and comfortable for her to put up with it. These clothes are often picked out by someone else since she's really bad about picking things herself. When she does wear something that was personally selected it will either be a) horribly out of fashion or kind of sloppy. By sloppy it simply means things like faded second-hand jeans, t-shirts, sweatshirts and the like. Saya tries to get away with wearing tennis shoes for everything non-official and grudgingly accepts more girlish flats instead when pressed. Heels are totally out of the question unless she absolutely has to, since she's never really gotten the hang of them and thinks they hurt too much when she's walking to be worth her time.
OTHER FEATURES Despite appearances Sayaka actually has impaired vision that requires her to wear glasses for seeing things that are kind of far away. She wears contacts for any official appearances.

OTHER INFORMATION
TALENTS & SKILLS As the soloist for a hot new idol group Saya boasts all the requisite talents: strong and clear singing voice, dancing expertise and the ability to connect with fans. She's also pretty knowledgeable about video games though it doesn't come up much. Beyond that she's the person to go to if you need to know where to find a second-hand shop, having a mental map of pretty much every one in Tokyo.
DISCOVERY Her 'real' father, in need of an extra source of money, thought nothing would be better for it than to have a kid who was a celebrity. So he basically bullied and forced her into going in for an audition at Gem Talent Agency, where her hard practice at singing classes paid off. She managed to remain calm and also impressed with her polite gratitude for the agency's time and consideration. First she was signed as an individual talent but then incorporated into GEM247 to heighten her own and the group's prestige and appeal.
ETCETERA Looks up to Hayato Moriyama of SUPER✩RANGERS as a big brother since he an his father took her in as a child; the relationship is strictly platonic for Sayaka. On the occasions she gets to see him she likes to sometimes tease him about when they're getting married, and likes to add that all she'd have to do is change one syllable of her family name to make it official. Is also known to have the metabolism required to eat a bizarrely high amount of junk food and not gain any noticeable weight from it.
