PERSONALITY There is much discussion between fans regarding the issue of whether or not this Queen deserves to reign over her precious GEMs. On paper it all sounds good: She speaks confidently and acts decisively, a professional young lady through and through. Its clear to see that she is committed to her work, and holds herself accountable for her group's mistakes while also having the ability to inspire people with her unique voice.
But like the harsh middle of winter, Mayu's temperament is true to her namesake. She can be cold and ruthless, cutting you down with solid arguments. Its shockingly difficult to read her if you haven't taken the time to learn her cues. Her smile is sweet but killer; at times she looks disinterested but that’s really when she is thinking the most, and when she's mad she keeps a tight lid on it. You would rarely see her frown, but in these moments prepare to receive the brunt of her rapier-like wit and unflinching retorts. She is not afraid to defend herself and her girls from unsavoury reporters but she does it so ruthlessly that it sometimes makes the situation worse. This could be part of the reason why people love to hate her. While she has cooled down a lot since middle school, those who act without moral values tend to lose her respect fairly quickly and may even getJUDO-TOSSED punished. In short, for a kawaii-desu aidoru, she tends to act rather crude if you push her far enough. Pretty scary - huh?
She is proud. Which is good for acknowledging her accomplishments, but it also means that she is not willing to admit her weaknesses to anyone (and pointing them out will only warrant a verbal lashing from her royal highness.) For these reason, people do not usually find out that she is going through hardships until long after they have passed. This also causes many misunderstandings since she does not explain or defend herself even when all the blame is being placed on her.
Its only those who are close to her that get to see the softer and more vulnerable nature that Mayu cradles deep within. She doesn't like to make jokes for fear that no one will find them funny - actually, they're usually not funny at all. A strange quirk of hers is that she likes to eat ice cream when she is angry. If she stormed out of a bad meeting, you could bet your bottom dollar she's at a ColdStone Creamery ordering a "Berry Angel of Spring" - even though it’s no good for her throat.
For all her moodiness and temper, perhaps she is considered the leader because Mayu is the oldest and perceived as the most mature and domineering of these cute girls. But hey, all the GEMs appear to be treated equally by their adoring fans so in their case, it’s just a title.
HISTORY Happiness is not a sentiment that was often expressed in the Kisaki household - except perhaps when used to say:

Mayu hails from a wealthy home and a life of privilege, her father being the CEO of the largest Refrigerator distributor in Japan. But despite being rich in money and possessions, her parents were certainly not rich in love. Their constant bickering and fighting finally brought them to a much-needed divorce that occurred during her first year of middle school. Although Mayu was a well mannered and bright young girl in her earlier years, the fall out from constant neglect and growing up in a house filled with hatred and anger eventually took its toll on sweet Mayu, causing a sudden shift in her personality. Malicious rumors began to form around her, especially after she was accused of stealing money from a classmate. She became a target of bullying and ridicule with nobody to turn to for help.
It was in these years that she took an interest in Judo and focused much of her stress and anxieties on martial arts. She was then able to deal with most of her aggressors physically and shoulder the weight of being shunned by her classmates by wearing a mask over her sensitivities. Then, the icey teenager began to melt for the sempai who was impossible to overthrow: The heralded 'prince' of their school. For some reason, he showed her kindness - you know, that thing that she isn't used to. And when they shared moments alone, they danced awkwardly around the topic of their feelings - never honestly admitting that she liked him. But come on, isn't it obvious she has the biggest crush on him since like ever? He was the first person to ever hear her singing voice, and praise it!!!
Well, heartbreak has the ability to change even the strongest of us and when the Prince hooked up with the high-school belle it sent Mayu back into the recesses of isolation. Once again, she became cold and self-reliant but there was one more thing that wriggled its way into her psyche. Ambition. She crawled out of her self-pity with a newfound resolve to become something amazing. Something inspiring. Something that all men across the nation reach out to touch, but can never have.

So she lost the glasses (yes, she wore dorky frames,) and let her hair down, working relentlessly on that audition tape for GEM Talent Agency.
APPEARANCE She's surprisingly light on her feet, given that all she wears are high heels. (Not that they help much with her height complex anyway - standing at 5'2" / 159cm.) Mayu doesn't fit modern conventions for what is considered beautiful, but as with many "Euro-Asians" her face is still pretty interesting. She's got clear skin, sleek dark hair and bright blue eyes that taper in towards the inner corner, kind of like an almond. Aside from those features everything else about the teen idol is quite minuscule, from her build to her tiny fairy nose and a mouth so small that you wouldn't even notice her lips if she didn't say something once in a while.
COMMON WEAR In contrast to being dressed up like a pretty doll on stage, her everyday-wear is fairly tame. Her clothes are the simple bare basics, although one look at the label and you would be surprised to see that they were brand names all along. She dresses fairly modestly and leans towards corporate chic, although most styles tend to suit her body type.

Because of this, Mayu can speak some phrases quite convincingly and fluently, when other times she can barely find the words to say. Her listening and comprehension in her second language are fairly good for a non-native speaker.
DISCOVERY She auditioned, and was rather tenacious about it even when they cut her on an earlier round. She was politely denied before even passing the photo taking stage. Apparently her deadpan was not what the producers and managers were looking for in their vision for GEM. But Mayu was determined to win, so she went back to the building and made a request to be heard. She had to insist for a few days, but perhaps they were getting desperate for members, because one day the person who was leading the search came down the lobby in person and simply told her to sing right there in front of everyone. Although everyone had expected her to fold like a house of cards, she stepped up to the plate and gave them everything she had. When she finished the last note of the popular song, there were a few cheers, some people had even joined in singing the parts that they knew.
Mayu didn't mind. Because at the end, it scored her a ticket into the auditioning stage. There was rough competition but due to an overlap of persona's one of the girls couldn't make it through even though their talent was arguably much grater than Mayu's. Dancing and looks are pretty much average in the eyes of her judges, but it was her voice and unique character that was keeping her in the race. They decided that her image was best suited as the matriarch of the group, and ever since their debut, Mayu has never looked back.
